ASME VIII - 1 FAQ
This page is always under construction. Our engineers are working on making this a quick reference page for common ASME questions.
Q: What are the requirement for joining parts of different thickness. A: A 3:1 transition taper is required by UW-9(c) if joining parts of greater thickness difference than the lesser of 1/4 of the thinnest part or 1/8".
Q: What are the weld size requirement for slip-on flanges. A: See UW-21.
T = Nominal Nozzle Neck Thickness
At hub, fillet weld size = lesser of 1.4T or hub thickness.
At face, fillet weld size = lesser of T or 1/4" [6.4 mm].
Q: Is NDE required for an opening located on a major weld seam? A: RT is required if the UG-36(c)(3) reinforcement exemption is being applied, see UW-14(b).
Q: Can a reinforcement pad be located on a major weld seam? A: Yes, see UG-82.
Q: Are telltale holes required in reinforcement pads? A: Yes, see UG-37(g).
Q: What are the requirements for spliced (multi-piece) reinforcement pads? A: See UG-37(h).
Q: Are there any requirements for the proximity of two or more welds? A: See UG-82(a) for pressure parts and UG-82(b) for non-pressure parts over weld seams. See UW-9(d) for RT requirements for cylinder longitudinal welds.
